Review: Jawbone Mini Jambox

The Mini Jambox from Jawbone is one of the coolest portable Bluetooth speakers we have seen in recent times. It is a smaller version of the company’s much-acclaimed Big Jambox. At a mere 255-gms, the Mini Jambox features a awesome design. It looks and feels great, too, coming in a body made out of a single aluminum enclosure. That body houses the stereo drivers and a passive radiator.

The Mini Jambox is available in nine different iterations with a mix of different colors and varying grille styles such as purple snowflake, graphite hex, and so on. On the sides of the Mini Jambox, you will find strips of rubber that roll under the bottom edges to act as feet. On the top, you’ll find the volume keys and a multi-purpose button (play, pause, Siri / Google Now). The right side, on the other hand, includes a microphone, a pairing button, a micro-USB port (for charging and updates), a 3.5mm auxiliary input and a glowing power button.

The box of the device meanwhile comes with a 3.5mm audio cable and a micro-USB cable. Sadly, there is no carry pouch included with the Mini Jambox. For the price tag this product is available for, you would think it would have been nicer to include a carry pouch. But then, the Jawbone Mini Jambox makes up for it by providing excellent sound quality.

To get the Mini Jambox working with your device, all you have to do is power it up, and you’ll be greeted by a new take on the familiar boom and beep that changes to a voice prompt to lets you know it’s time to pair the devices. The Mini Jambox is capable of handling two simultaneous connections at a time over a Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy connection.

The Jawbone Mini Jambox is compatible with almost all smartphones and tablets that can stream audio through Bluetooth connection. However, users of both iOS and Android devices get a bonus in the form of a Jawbone app. In addition to letting users remotely control the Jambox’s options, the app provides one-stop access to streaming services and playlists on Rdio, Spotify, and iTunes. The Android version, meanwhle comes without the iTunes support.

When it comes to audio quality, it is sheer bliss. Compared to some of the Bluetooth speakers we have tested in past couple of months, we found the Mini Jambox counding much cleaner and louder. It is in fact loud enough to fill up a small room with sound and music. The bass performance of the speaker is also good. While Jawbone rates the battery life of the Mini Jambox to 10 hours of audio streaming time on a full charge, we were able to eke out around 9 hours of battery life in our tests.

Jawbone Mini Jambox

Of course you pay a premium for this slickly designed Bluetooth speaker that accompanies a brilliant build quality. Having said that, for its high price tag, the Jawbne Mini Jambox also excels in sound quality. It indeed is one of the best sounding Bluetooth speakers we have comes across in recent times.
