Review: Microsoft Surface Pro 4

EditorsChoiceMicrosoft has entered the hybrid market with its very own Surface Pro device line-up. Microsoft Surface Pro 4, the latest offering in the product series, boasts a powerful configuration and an extremely pleasing design.

Even after being in the marker for some months, the hardware featured in the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is still among the best. However, it is being speculated that the Surface Pro 5 is about to be launched soon.

The tablet aspect of the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is not much different from the Surface Pro 3. It features the adjustable kickstand. The device is metallic grey and features a magnesium finish. The i5 variant weighs merely 786 grams and the one with Intel Core M weighs even lesser.

The device features a Micro SD connection slot, a mini Display port and a USB 3.0 port. The device features a 12.3 inch Pixel sense display. The resolution of the device is 2,736 x 1,824. The pixel density of 267 pixels per inch makes the viewing experience excellent.

The device produced vibrant and detailed colours. In terms of design, no significant changes have been made since the Surface Pro 3. However, that is not a bad thing as the Surface Pro 3 is one of the best looking hybrid devices in the market.

The Surface Pro 4 does incorporate some minor changes. The way the surface pen was docked earlier has been changed. The short side of the tablet still magnetically holds the stylus, but the strength of the magnet has been increased and the power and volume keys have been shifted away from the docking area. The top edge houses these buttons now.

The surface pen is based on the N-Trig technology which is not the most common one used in such devices. The pressure sensitivity levels of the surface pen have been significantly improved. Even the nib of the pen can be changed according to the requirements of the user.

The type cover keyboard offered in the Surface Pro 4 is a big improvement to the previous version. The keys are now properly spaced and travel is much more comfortable. The trackpad has also been improved as it is bigger and more responsive now. The improvements are there, but not easily visible. However, they do improve the overall experience of using the device.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is offered in a lot of variants. The one with the Core M processor packs Intel HD 515 graphics. The i5 variants are loaded with Intel HD 520 graphics whereas the i7 variant of the device boasts Intel HD 540 graphics. The buyer can also choose the desired amount of RAM. The available options are 4GB, 8GB and 16GB.

The Intel Core M variant powered with 8GB of RAM can handle web browsing without breaking a sweat. Video editing can be done and some steam games are also playable. However, graphic intense applications don’t run properly. The device features an 8-megapixel rear camera as well as 5-megapixel front shooter. Both the cameras are pretty decent for a tablet.

Another interesting feature the device has in Microsoft Hello. The front camera can be used to instantly unlock the device via facial recognition. Due to this, the need for typing the password again and again vanishes. The device can run for a maximum of 9 hours with average usage. The device runs Windows 10 pro.

Simply put, if you are not tight on money, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is the best windows 10 hybrid device you can get.
