Review: ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070

Nvidia has been largely dominating the graphic card industry since a long time. The GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 are currently ruling the graphic card kingdom. The GeForce GTX 1080 is undoubtedly the best graphics card available in the market. However, even the best can get better.

The partnership between Asus and Nvdia has given rise to the ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070. Being considerably cheaper than the ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1080, the ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 is a very impressive and intriguing choice available in the market.

However, the question is what makes the ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 better than other graphic cards in the GTX 1070 line-up. Well, Asus is a premium hardware manufacturer, so that name alone means a lot. However, the brand name is not the only thing the ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 has to offer.

This variant is impressive in terms of energy efficiency as all the three fans automatically switch off when the load is low. Another interesting feature is called Asus FanConnect. What it means is that the PCB houses fan headers containing 4 pins that can be used to attach more fans to the setup.

These optional fans can really help in creation of targeted airflow. The ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 carries a base frequency of 1,632MHz and a boost frequency of 1,835MHz.

However, that is the out of the box configuration. Using the brand’s software utility called GPU tweak II, users can turn on overclocked mode and get a base frequency of 1,658MHz and a boost frequency of 1,860MHz. Asus has also made changes to the output configuration laid out by Nvidia. Instead of 3 DisplayPorts, 2 HDMI slots have been provided.

For the ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070, the output configuration is 2 DisplayPorts and 2 HDMI slots. This change has been made to support the futuristic VR technology. It is a known fact that VR configurations don’t work too well with DisplayPorts. The v2.0 HDMI ports are well suited for VR.

However, the presence of 2 DisplayPorts of version 1.4 make sure that setting up traditional configurations does not prove to be a problem. The ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 is the top-end GTX 1070 variant manufactured by the brand.

The 2016 reboot of DOOM gives a minimum of 111 frames per second at full HD resolution. When the resolution is set to ultra HD, the game runs at a minimum of 43 FPS. At full HD, Rise of The Tomb Raider plays at 83 frames per second whereas the game delivers a minimum of 28 FPS at ultra HD(average FPS are 43).

The Division doesn’t impress much as it plays with a minimum of 31 FPS at ultra HD and 73 FPS at full HD. The cooling system incorporated by Asus is just brilliant. It manages to maintain the temperate of 61℃ even when the load is at maximum.

The ASUS ROG Strix Geforce GTX 1070 is an expensive GPU. The sheer amount of money spent on this card can be used to build an entry level PC. The custom features incorporated by Asus are quite good, but not good enough for the price tag!

Price: AED 2550 approx.
